Metabolic Health & Energy

My Story: How Healing My Metabolism Helped My Mental Health

A personal story about discovering the connection between metabolic health and mental wellness, and how addressing physical health transformed emotional well-being.

My Story: How Healing My Metabolism Helped My Mental Health

I want to share something personal with you—something I wish someone had told me years ago. The connection between my metabolic health and my mental health changed everything for me, and it might change things for you too.

The "Hot Mess Express"

For years, I was on what I call the "hot mess express." I was a wife, a mom of four, and I was drowning. Burnt out, exhausted, and completely disconnected from my own body. I thought I was failing at everything—motherhood, marriage, even my faith.

I was struggling with:

  • Constant anxiety and overwhelm
  • Mood swings that felt out of control
  • Exhaustion that no amount of coffee could fix
  • Feeling like I was always one step away from breaking

I tried everything I thought would help: more prayer, more Bible study, more self-care (when I could fit it in). But nothing seemed to stick.

The Discovery

Then I learned about metabolic health and how it affects everything—including mental health. I discovered that my blood sugar crashes were directly connected to my anxiety and mood swings. My exhaustion wasn't just from being a busy mom—it was from my body not processing energy efficiently.

This wasn't about willpower or trying harder. This was about understanding how my body actually worked and giving it what it needed to function well.

The Connection

Here's what I learned: when your blood sugar is unstable, your brain doesn't have consistent fuel. This affects:

  • Your ability to regulate emotions
  • Your stress response
  • Your sleep quality
  • Your mental clarity

All of these directly impact your mental health. You can't think clearly or manage emotions well when your brain is running on empty.

The Transformation

As I started focusing on stabilizing my metabolism—simple things like eating protein with meals, managing my blood sugar, and supporting my body's natural processes—something incredible happened. My mental health started improving too.

I noticed:

  • Less anxiety and overwhelm
  • More stable moods
  • Better sleep
  • More mental clarity
  • Feeling like myself again

It wasn't that the spiritual practices weren't important—they absolutely were. But I needed to address the physical foundation first. My body needed to be functioning well for my mind and spirit to thrive.

A Holistic Approach

This experience taught me that healing happens in layers. You can't separate your physical health from your mental health from your spiritual health. They're all connected. When I started taking care of my body, I was better able to engage with my faith, manage my emotions, and show up for my family.

What This Means for You

If you're struggling with mental health challenges—anxiety, depression, overwhelm, mood swings—I want you to know that addressing your metabolic health might be part of the solution. This isn't to say that therapy, medication, or spiritual practices aren't important. But your physical health is the foundation.

A Message of Hope

If you're where I was—feeling like you're failing at everything, struggling with your mental health, and wondering if there's hope—there is. You're not broken. You're not failing. Your body might just need some support to function the way it was designed to.

Next Steps

If this resonates with you, I'd love to help. I've walked this path, and I know how overwhelming it can feel. But I also know that change is possible. You don't have to stay stuck.
